  • Environmental Risk Assessment

SECURE is pleased to offer our customers a dedicated team of professionals focused on Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA), a specialized management tool used for sites that have been impacted by contaminants. The process involves identification of site-specific receptors (human and ecological), contaminants of concern, and exposure pathways through which receptors may encounter contaminants. This information is then used to conduct a risk assessment. Regulatory closure, cost-savings, minimal environmental impact and human disruption are all to be gained from using the ERA approach. Remediation following an ERA is typically much smaller in scope than other conventional assessment approaches, and can be completed at a substantially lower cost. SECURE has emerged as a leader in risk-based approaches in Western Canada and actively advocates for the growth and acceptance of ERA by working closely with provincial regulators.

Depending on the site-specific risk assessment conditions and stakeholder needs, SECURE utilizes three levels of ERA (with increasing complexity and data requirements):

Site-Specific Risk Assessment – quantitative SECURE risk assessors have successfully completed ERAs for various types of sites, including: Oil and Gas (wellsites, pipelines, upstream and downstream facilities), Agricultural lands, Wildlands and natural areas, Current and proposed industrial facilities, Commercial or residential properties, Mine sites and Spills.

It should be noted that closure of regulatory liability through a risk-based approach provides the same level of human health and ecological protection as closure using generic standards/guidelines developed by regulatory bodies. Both approaches result in the same regulatory instrument (for example, certificate of restoration or reclamation certificate).

  • Environmental Planning

The environmental planning team at SECURE promotes corporate responsibility and regulatory compliance. We assist our customers by ensuring we are current with regulatory trends and criteria thereby avoiding unnecessary delays or excess costs. Our well qualified professionals aid in planning for any scale of project, and provide practical solutions to site selection, predevelopment, and monitoring. Our diverse team includes wildlife biologists, wetland fisheries scientists, hydrologists, forestry technicians, vegetation and soil specialists, and geoscientists.

Clients have relied on our technical writing expertise to produce manuals and environmental handbooks including waste management, release response and environmental planning.

We complete species at risk assessments and wildlife surveys. Services include background reviews, field assessments based on provincial protocols, identification of wildlife niche sites and identification and delineation of specific habitat.

Our regulatory group is dedicated to ensuring that audits are completed with the diligence necessary to meet criteria. We specialize in Indian Oil and Gas Canada compliance audits and response to regulatory non-compliance notifications.

We specialize in the identification and protection of watercourses and wetlands. Services include fisheries assessment (QAES), wetland assessment, crossing notification, pipeline exposures, HDD monitoring, mitigation plans and regulatory authorizations.

Comprehensive desktop reviews are completed to summarize areas of environmental sensitivity, regulatory concerns and facilitate efficient project development. Our team provides input and support for route selection and siting. Locations are chosen taking both environmental and cost factors into consideration.

Field surveys gather land use and topographical information, detailed soil profiling and a complete vegetation assessment. We have the expertise to provide these assessments for private, crown, special areas and reserve lands.

Our GIS technicians offer customized data capture, constraint mapping and overviews of project areas. Mapping and reports are offered to aid in site selection and meet geospatial requirements.
